What is measurement of respiratory muscles?
Measurement of respiratory muscles is a useful test performed by pulmonologists. Patient tries to inhale and then exhale as strongly as he can (maximum effort). Maximum Inspiratory and Expiratory Pressures are calculated and this is very important in cases where there is a suspision of muscle weakness, i.e. neuromuscular diseases etc.
Is it a useful test?
Yes, because neuromuscular disorders can be diagnoses early, even before the patient has characteristic symptoms, so treatment may start earlier and this can affect disease prognosis. Additionally, this test helps in estimation of someone’s ability to expectorate and cough, especially after serious infections or operations.
