What is a laboratory sleep study?

A laboratory sleep study, also called polysomnography (PSG), is an overnight examination that records sleep and breathing. At Nicosia Sleep Lab in Egkomi, Nicosia, the recording takes place while you sleep, under the supervision of a trained technician.

The study records sleep stages, breathing, chest and abdominal breathing movements, oxygen saturation, heart rhythm, eye and limb movements, snoring and body position. Audio and video are also recorded. When indicated, additional carbon dioxide monitoring is used to investigate hypoventilation.

When is a sleep study recommended?

Polysomnography can help investigate sleep apnea, other sleep-related breathing disorders, periodic limb movements and selected parasomnias, such as unusual movements or behaviours during sleep. The examination is selected after a clinical assessment, taking your symptoms and medical history into account.

When investigating narcolepsy, an overnight sleep study may form part of the assessment and may be followed by a specialised daytime examination, such as a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), when indicated.

Chronic insomnia does not always require a sleep study. Polysomnography may be helpful in selected cases, particularly when another sleep disorder is suspected or the diagnosis remains uncertain.

What happens during the study?

You arrive at the laboratory in the evening at the agreed time. A technician places external sensors on your head and body, together with belts that record breathing movements. The examination is non-invasive, and you sleep with the sensors in place overnight. A trained technician monitors the recording and can assist you if needed.

The results are assessed by Dr Andreas Zachariades, Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine Specialist, through a detailed review of sleep stages and recorded events. The findings are considered alongside your symptoms and medical history to determine the next steps.

How should you prepare?

  • When booking, ask for the preparation instructions and confirm your arrival time.
  • Tell us about your medications and any use of CPAP or oxygen. Do not change or stop your treatment without instructions from your treating doctor.
  • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening, and follow any specific instructions from the laboratory.
  • Bring comfortable sleepwear and the personal items you need for an overnight stay.
